What We’ve Been Building — And How It Helps Your Properties Show Up in AI Search

Something is changing in how guests find vacation rentals.

A year ago, it was straightforward: rank on Google, list on Airbnb, hope for the best. In 2026, travelers are opening ChatGPT and asking for recommendations. They’re using Perplexity to compare direct booking sites. They’re getting suggestions from Google’s AI Overviews before they ever scroll to a traditional search result.

This isn’t a small shift. ChatGPT now handles 12% of Google’s search volume, and AI referral traffic to websites grew 527% in the first half of 2025 alone. More importantly, guests who find your property through AI convert at 15.9% — compared to just 1.76% for Google organic search. That’s a 9x higher conversion rate.

This shift has been on our minds every day. Over the last eight months, we pushed 150+ releases to CraftedStays — and while many of them are about making your site faster, more connected, and easier to manage, the thread running through everything is this: making sure your properties are discoverable wherever guests are searching, including AI.

Here’s what we built and why it matters.

Built for AI Search From the Ground Up

This is the biggest investment we’ve made, and it’s one you might not see on the surface — but search engines and AI assistants see it immediately.

Structured Data That Speaks to Machines

We completely overhauled the structured data across every CraftedStays template. According to Google’s own documentation, pages with comprehensive structured data are 73% more likely to appear in AI Overviews. Your property pages now include:

  • VacationRental schema with geo coordinates, postal codes, and occupancy — so AI knows exactly what and where your property is
  • Organization schema — so AI understands your brand, not just your listings
  • FAQ schema — so your frequently asked questions can appear directly in AI responses and search results (pages with FAQ schema are 60% more likely to be featured in AI Overviews)
  • Breadcrumb schema — so AI understands your site hierarchy
  • WebSite SearchAction schema — so search engines know your site is searchable

Why does this matter? When someone asks ChatGPT “Where should I stay in Scottsdale for a golf trip?”, the AI pulls from structured data to understand which properties match. If your listings have rich, machine-readable data about location, amenities, and capacity — you’re in the conversation. If they don’t, you’re invisible.

SEO Meta Overrides — Control How AI Describes Your Property

We used to auto-generate meta tags from your property titles and descriptions. That’s a solid default — but now you have more control.

You can override the meta title, meta description, and social sharing image for each individual property. A specific “Oceanfront 2BR in Destin, FL — steps from Henderson Beach, sleeps 6, heated pool, book direct and save” tells both Google and AI exactly who this property is for. Generic descriptions get skipped. Specific ones get cited.

We wrote a full guide on how to make the most of this feature: How to Optimize Your Short Term Rental SEO for Google, ChatGPT, and AI Search.

Every Image Tells AI a Story

Every image on your site now supports custom alt text and captions. This isn’t just an accessibility improvement — it’s how machines understand visual content.

“IMG_4392.jpg” tells AI nothing. “Sunrise view from the private balcony overlooking Maui’s North Shore” tells it everything.

Server-Side Rendering — What AI Actually Sees

Here’s a technical detail that matters more than most people realize: AI crawlers from OpenAI, Perplexity, and Google only read the initial HTML your site sends. If content is rendered by JavaScript after the page loads, AI never sees it.

Every CraftedStays site renders content server-side. That means when ChatGPT’s crawler visits your property page, it sees everything — your descriptions, amenities, reviews, pricing, location details. Nothing is hidden. This is a structural advantage of our platform that WordPress-based and plugin-dependent solutions can’t guarantee.

Rebuilt Sitemaps

We rebuilt sitemaps with proper timestamps, blog entries, and nested page support. This gives search engines and AI crawlers an accurate, up-to-date map of every page on your site — so nothing gets missed during indexing.

Faster Sites, Better Rankings, More Crawls

AI crawlers and search engines both favor fast, well-structured sites. We ran a dedicated page speed sprint, and every CraftedStays direct booking website benefits:

  • WebP images served automatically — smaller files, faster loads
  • Responsive images across all 10 templates — the right size for every screen
  • Static maps on property pages — fast-loading, no heavy JavaScript
  • CDN delivery for all template assets worldwide
  • Server-side blog rendering — faster loads and fully visible to crawlers

These improvements directly affect whether your site gets crawled, indexed, and recommended — or skipped. AI crawlers have limited crawl budgets. They prioritize fast, clean sites.

Your PMS and Your Direct Booking Website, Working as One

The other major theme: making your PMS and your direct booking website feel like a single system.

Real-time sync across all PMS providers. We already supported real-time webhooks for some of our PMS partners, and as Guesty and Hospitable rolled out their own webhook capabilities, we were ready on day one. Now when you update a property in any connected PMS, it shows up on your site instantly — no manual refresh, no waiting. Availability calendars update the moment a booking is made, across all providers.

This matters for AI search too. Fresh, accurate data is a signal that search engines and AI systems trust. When your availability and pricing are always current, your site is more likely to be recommended.

Reviews pull in automatically. Guest reviews from Guesty, Hospitable, Hostfully, Hostaway, and OwnerRez now sync to your site without you doing anything. Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals for both traditional search and AI — properties with recent, visible reviews are more likely to be cited and recommended.

Guesty Pay is live. If you’re on Guesty, your guests can now complete their entire booking and payment without leaving your website. Multiple currencies, guest details, quote handling — the full checkout experience.

iCalendar support. You don’t need a full PMS integration to use CraftedStays anymore. Connect any property with an iCal link and start accepting direct bookings.

Sync All. One button to re-sync every property from your PMS. No more clicking through properties one by one.

More Control Over Your Direct Booking Site

Haven template. A new template built around smooth animations, an integrated search bar, and a modern design system.

Custom typography. Choose from Google Fonts or upload your own typeface. Your brand’s font, applied consistently across your entire site.

Property collections. Curate groups like “Beachfront Stays” or “Pet-Friendly Cabins” and display them in grid or slider layouts.

Redesigned footer. Custom logo support, phone and email display, social links, and flexible menu items.

Custom 404 pages. Even your error pages match your brand now.

SVG icon support. Upload custom icons for card blocks and sections in Haven and Cortiva templates.

Better Booking Experience

GA4 ecommerce tracking. Full booking funnel events — view property, begin checkout, purchase — now fire to all your GA4 measurement IDs. See exactly where guests engage and where they drop off.

Cleaner checkout. Remove the header and footer from your checkout page for a distraction-free experience.

Drag and drop that works. Reordering property images, page sections, and custom pages is now reliable.

Custom checkout result screen. The post-booking page can be customized — add insurance links, upsell offers, or a personal welcome message.

Quality of Life

  • Filter by occupancy without dates — guests can search by party size before picking dates
  • Self-hosted password reset — reset passwords without leaving the platform
  • Custom domain setup — guided DNS instructions sent automatically, SSL handled for you
  • Domain changes from admin — no support ticket needed
  • FAQ/accordion blocks — expandable content sections for Cortiva template
  • Blog editor improvements — clear color buttons for text and background

Dozens of Bug Fixes

Behind the scenes, we fixed dozens of issues — from sitemap URLs and Google search snippet problems to booking widget layouts, cookie consent banners, and footer link bugs. Things that used to break quietly now just work.

Where We’re Going: AI Discovery

Everything above is live right now. But we’re not slowing down.

We believe direct booking is entering a new era — one where guests discover properties through AI assistants, voice search, and conversational interfaces that don’t just return a list of links but actually recommend specific places to stay. With 62% of searches now involving voice and 71% of Americans using AI for purchase research, this isn’t a future trend — it’s the present.

We’re actively building what we’re calling AI Discovery — a set of features designed to make your properties visible across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, and whatever comes next. This includes deeper machine-readable data, instant indexing so your changes reach AI search within minutes, and tools that help you create the kind of specific, unique content that AI systems actually cite and recommend.

The best part: most of this will be automatic. We handle the technical optimization at the platform level. You focus on your properties and your guests — we make sure AI can find you.

We wrote more about where we see the industry going here: The Direct Booking Platform Built for How Guests Actually Search in 2026.

We’re also working on new templates and a more powerful search experience. More on that soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my vacation rental to show up on ChatGPT?
ChatGPT search is powered by Bing’s index and OpenAI’s own crawlers. Your property needs three things: structured data that tells AI what your property is (which CraftedStays provides automatically), content that’s rendered server-side so crawlers can read it (built into every CraftedStays template), and fresh, accurate information that gets indexed regularly. We’re building instant indexing to make this even faster.

Does structured data really help with AI search?
Yes — significantly. Pages with comprehensive structured data are 73% more likely to appear in Google AI Overviews, and pages with FAQ schema are 60% more likely to be featured. Structured data is how AI understands your property’s location, amenities, capacity, pricing, and reviews. Without it, AI has to guess. With it, AI can recommend your property with confidence.

What’s the difference between traditional SEO and AI search optimization?
Traditional SEO optimizes for keywords and ranking position. AI search optimization (sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization or GEO) optimizes for being cited as the answer. The key difference: Google shows 10 results, but AI typically cites only 2-7 sources per response. Your content needs to be specific, factual, and structured enough that AI chooses to cite it — not just rank it.

Do I need to do anything to make my CraftedStays site AI-ready?
Most of the optimization happens automatically at the platform level — structured data, server-side rendering, fast page loads, and sitemap generation are all built in. The things you can do to improve further: write specific property descriptions with real details (distances, amenities, capacity), add custom alt text to your images, set custom meta titles and descriptions, and keep your content fresh.

How is CraftedStays different from WordPress for AI search?
WordPress sites depend on plugins (Yoast, RankMath) that each user must install, configure, and maintain. CraftedStays handles structured data, rendering, and performance at the platform level — every improvement we make deploys to every customer site automatically. More importantly, our server-side rendering guarantees AI crawlers see your complete content, while WordPress sites with heavy themes or page builders often deliver incomplete HTML that AI can’t read.

Are guests really using AI to find vacation rentals?
Yes, and the trend is accelerating. AI referral traffic grew 527% in the first half of 2025, with ChatGPT driving 87% of all AI referrals. The conversion rate from AI referral traffic is 15.9% — 9x higher than Google organic. Travelers are asking AI questions like “Find me a pet-friendly cabin near Asheville that sleeps 8 with a hot tub” and getting direct recommendations, often with booking links.

Your direct booking site is already more AI-ready than you might think. And it’s about to get a lot more visible.
